Honoring Juneteenth: A Legacy of Liberation and a Future of Collective Power

Each year on June 19, communities across the country commemorate Juneteenth, the day in 1865 when the last enslaved Black people in Galveston, Texas, finally received word that they were free. This came more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation had been signed.

That delay was not just a historical detail.

It reflects how deeply injustice was embedded in our systems, and how much effort it has taken (and continues to take) to move toward true freedom. Juneteenth is a reminder of the resistance, resilience, and power that live on in Black communities.

At FIERCE, Juneteenth is not just about honoring the past.

It is a time to reflect on our collective strength, celebrate community, and recommit to the ongoing work of healing and justice. Freedom is not a single event. It is something we practice, protect, and build together every day.

Celebrate with Community in Richmond

We are proud to support the City of Richmond’s annual Juneteenth Parade and Festival on Saturday, June 21, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM at Nicholl Park (3230 Macdonald Ave, Richmond, CA). Richmond has been honoring Juneteenth for more than 40 years, and this tradition continues to bring people together in powerful and joyful ways.

This is more than a celebration. It is a space to gather, honor our history, and express pride in our culture. The festival will feature:

  • A community parade through the heart of Richmond

  • Live music, dance, and cultural performances

  • Local food, vendors, and family-friendly activities
