Unity in the Community
On Saturday, July 26, FIERCE Advocates joined neighbors, families, and fellow service providers at the Unity in the Community Health & Resource Fair, hosted at Macdonald Avenue Church of Christ in Richmond, CA. With a vibrant turnout and powerful offerings, the event served as a reminder of what’s possible when a community comes together to prioritize well-being.
A Collective Commitment to Wellness
The fair was created in response to the rising health concerns impacting families across Contra Costa County, particularly the prevalence of preventable diseases and mental health conditions. The event emphasized holistic wellness by addressing the mind, body, and spirit, and provided attendees with tools to take control of their health journeys.
As described by event organizer Geraldine Wilson, a member of Macdonald Avenue Church of Christ,“ Our mission is to provide knowledge and resources for holistic well-being… through awareness and education.”
At the event, FIERCE offered information and support on a range of services including life coaching, doula services, and Policy and Advocacy (PAO). It was an opportunity to connect face-to-face with families, answer questions, and ensure that people left empowered not only with information but with a sense of care.
Meeting Urgent Needs with Love
One of the standout moments of the day was the clothing giveaway, which resonated deeply with attendees.
“Many participants called and drove to pick up family members so they could also benefit from the free items,” said Shukura Lattier, FIERCE’s Health and Wellness Program Coordinator. “The current economic climate has made people more receptive to seeking and accepting assistance.”
This moment reflected how simple acts, like offering clothes or conversation, can meet real, urgent needs and reinforce the dignity of every person.
Why This Matters
Community events like this one make vital resources more approachable and personal. They remind residents that they are not alone, and that support is close by.
The heath fair’s motto was, “If you don’t take time for your wellness, you’ll be forced to make time for your illness,” and guided the offerings of the day. FIERCE Advocates remains committed to creating accessible, healing-centered spaces where families can grow, connect, and thrive.
