Community Power Moves Humphrey Playlot Forward
Residents celebrated a major city milestone and shaped the final vision for a park grounded in their community’s needs.

Hilda Nava’s words capture the energy surrounding Humphrey Playlot after months of organizing, relationship building, and community advocacy.
Humphrey Playlot has officially been added to the City of Richmond’s Project Prioritization List as an approved but unfunded capital improvement project. This designation represents a meaningful step toward securing the investment needed to rebuild the park, while recognizing the work residents have led to bring attention to this important neighborhood space.
Funding has yet to be secured, so the campaign continues with research, power mapping, grant exploration, and new opportunities for residents to advocate for the park their community deserves.
A Park Design Shaped by the Community
On June 20, over 60 community members gathered for the Humphrey Playlot Summer Block Party, where residents reviewed and finalized the park design alongside MITHUN, an interdisciplinary design firm experienced in community-led planning.
Families and children gathered around the plans, asked questions, shared their perspectives, and helped ensure the final design reflected how the community hopes to use the space. The plans include improved drainage, native landscaping, nature-based play features, and an enclosed area for pets.
The gathering offered residents an opportunity to see their organizing reflected in a tangible vision for the park.
“It feels like the park is getting more attention now. There’s definitely some momentum here,” shared Resident Leader Arnold Dimas. “Excited to see some prettier signs and see what’s posted on the bulletin.”
Celebrating Community Connections
The block party brought neighbors, families, local leaders, and small businesses together for an afternoon rooted in connection and shared purpose.
A local DJ who lives near Humphrey Playlot provided the music, while Richmond native Bandy McBride generously donated food and drinks for the children and volunteered staff to prepare and serve food throughout the event.
The Kkandy Faktory, which participated in the event separately, described the block party as “a community event done right” and reflected on the care that went into creating a welcoming and memorable experience.

The event also received support from Councilmembers Doria Robinson and Claudia Jimenez, community advocate and leader Brandon Evans, and Mayoral candidate Ahmad Anderson, who recognized the gathering on social media.
Resident Leadership Creating Momentum
This progress has been shaped by residents who continue to show up, speak out, and help guide the campaign. FIERCE extends a special thank-you to Resident Leaders Laura, Arnold, Cynthia, and Camila for their dedication to Humphrey Playlot and the surrounding community!
Humphrey Playlot’s Adopt-A-Spot location has also received official City approval, supporting continued stewardship and visibility for the park.
The next phase of the campaign will focus on turning the park’s approved but unfunded designation into the resources and action needed to begin construction. Residents can participate in research meetings, support advocacy efforts, and help build broader community support for the project.
