Healing from the Inside Out at the Latina Sanctuary Conference

An intentional sequence of reflection, education, and grounding helped participants explore trauma and reconnect with the present.

On June 27, FIERCE Advocates welcomed over 50 community members to the 2026 Latina Sanctuary Conference. Presented entirely in Spanish, the gathering created an accessible and culturally responsive space for honest conversations about trauma and mental health.

From the shared meals and music to the carefully structured presentations, every part of the day helped attendees feel welcomed, supported, and ready to engage. Participants learned how trauma can affect the mind and body, explored beliefs that can discourage people from seeking support, and practiced techniques they could carry into their daily lives.

Recognizing the Pain We Carry

Licensed psychologist, Gustavo Merced, opened the program with interactive activities that encouraged participants to connect with their emotions and experiences.

His presentation explored how migration can carry its own forms of grief, disruption, and emotional pain. Participants considered the many ways people experience transition, including changes connected to place, identity, relationships, and their inner lives.

As the conversation unfolded, several participants shared personal experiences and began recognizing trauma they had previously been unable to name. Access to clear information helped them understand their experiences and identify tools for moving forward.

Understanding Trauma and the Nervous System

Dr. Aeriell Armas, a therapist, guided participants through the ways the brain and nervous system can respond to trauma.

Her presentation addressed common myths and limiting beliefs surrounding mental health while helping participants better understand reactions such as anxiety, negative thoughts, and heightened stress. She also shared practical strategies participants could use when navigating difficult emotional moments.

This knowledge gave attendees language for experiences that can sometimes feel confusing or isolating, opening the door to greater understanding and self-compassion.

Returning to the Present

Psychologist Andrea Melano concluded the conference with a session focused on nervous system regulation and reconnecting with the present.

Through meditation, breathing, and relaxation exercises, participants practiced ways to ground themselves and move through the emotions raised during the day. The session offered a gentle close to the conference, giving attendees time to reflect and leave feeling calmer and more connected.

The order of the presentations was intentional: Participants began by recognizing and naming pain, continued by learning how trauma can affect the mind and body, and concluded by practicing tools that can support them in everyday life.

Continuing the Conversation

The Latina Sanctuary Conference created a culturally responsive space where community members could explore mental health in their preferred language and receive information from trusted professionals.

FIERCE will continue creating opportunities for connection, reflection, and community healing through Latina Sanctuary programs and events.
