Reclaiming Self: Black Women Gather in Care, Reflection, and Sisterhood
At the 2026 Black Women’s Sanctuary Conference, women created space to listen inward, care for their whole selves, and carry practical wellness practices into their daily lives.
“I so needed this.”
Those few words captured what the 2026 Black Women’s Sanctuary Conference offered many of the women gathered at Fireside Hall in San Pablo on September 26: permission to pause, exhale, and receive care.
This year’s theme, Reclaiming Self, grew from an experience familiar to many Black women. Family responsibilities, careers, caregiving, and systems that fail to honor or protect Black women can leave little space for their own needs, dreams, and well-being.
“Black women so often pour into everyone and everything around them while placing their own needs, dreams, and well-being on the back burner,” Coach Paula reflected.
The conference invited women to return some of that care to themselves.
Throughout the day, they were encouraged to listen to their bodies, honor their needs without guilt, establish loving boundaries, and reconnect with the joy, peace, and possibility they deserve.
Caring for the Whole Self
The theme came to life through experiences supporting the mind, body, and spirit.
A physician explored the relationship between physical and emotional well-being, helping women deepen their understanding of how different parts of their health are connected. Other conversations examined the relationship between plant life and inner wellness, along with the importance of making informed choices about the products women use in their daily lives.
Each experience encouraged women to become more intentional about their wellness while trusting what their bodies and intuition were communicating.
The Your Style, Your Confidence, Your Whole Self experience offered another way to explore identity and self-expression. Women were invited to consider personal style as an opportunity to celebrate who they are and choose how they want to show up in the world.
A spoken-word offering affirmed the wealth, worth, and royalty within every woman in the room. Its message reminded women that their value extends far beyond their accomplishments, titles, and the roles they fulfill for others.
Together, these experiences gave women practical information while creating room for reflection, creativity, movement, and joy.
When Care Becomes Communal
Some of the conference’s deepest impact could be seen in the ways women cared for one another.
Throughout the day, women shared stories, offered encouragement, listened without judgment, and created room for vulnerability. Sometimes that care was expressed through conversation. In other moments, a nod, smile, shared breath, or quiet presence communicated understanding.
Coach Paula recalled one woman finding the courage to name a boundary and another feeling safe enough to release an emotion she had been carrying. As women responded with compassion rather than trying to minimize or immediately resolve each experience, the room became a place where they could feel heard and supported.
Reflections such as “I so needed this” revealed how meaningful it was for women to step away from daily expectations and enter a space where they could soften, receive support, and tend to themselves.
The sisterhood that emerged throughout the day reinforced a powerful truth: self-care is deeply personal, and healing can also happen in community. Being surrounded by women who understand, affirm, and celebrate one another can make it easier to release the feeling that everything must be carried alone.
Carrying Wellness Into Everyday Life
The conference was designed to support women beyond the hours they spent together.
Women left with practices they could integrate into everyday life, including intentional breathing, movement, reflection, clearer communication, and reaching out to a trusted sister for support. They were also encouraged to recognize when rest is needed, establish healthier expectations in their relationships, and protect their peace without excessive guilt.
One of the most important messages women carried home was simple: “I need to take care of me, too.”
That commitment may look different from one person to another. It could mean pausing for a few intentional breaths, making time for movement, communicating a boundary, creating space for joy, or allowing someone else to offer care. These small, consistent choices can help make wellness part of daily life.
They can also support healthier relationships by helping women communicate their needs and give from a place of greater balance.
Continuing the Journey of Reclaiming Self
Black women deserve rest, wellness, connection, and joy for their own sake. Creating culturally affirming spaces where women can care for themselves also nurtures stronger relationships and deeper community connections.
The Black Women’s Sanctuary Conference offered one day of concentrated care, while the work of reclaiming self continues through everyday choices and ongoing community support. Through Black Women’s Sanctuary, FIERCE continues to offer healing-centered circles where Black women can exhale, connect, and leave feeling lighter and more grounded.
As Coach Paula shared, “Reclaiming self is not a one-day experience; it is an ongoing commitment to honoring who you are and who you are becoming.”
It lives in the decision to make room for your health, peace, dreams, and happiness. It grows when women allow themselves to receive care, reach for support, and remember that they deserve lives filled with wholeness, connection, freedom, and joy.
